CT Centre: Visit from Powering Our World

POWERING OUR WORLD:
Career and Technology Centre Visit

On September 26th, the Energy and Environmental Innovations class at the Career and Technology Centre was lucky enough to participate in the Generation Green Powering Our World Program in partnership with Open Streets Events. It was an awesome hour and a half session in which our students had the opportunity to participate hands on in learning about energy conservation. Students got to ride a FenderGenerator Bike to see how electricity is generated and transferred, play with solar panels and look at a dissected electric guitar- all much cooler than listening to a teacher talk!

Students riding the FenderGenerator Bike- learning how much energy is required through pedaling to activate different devices.

Throughout the presentation and hands on learning experiences, students learned the importance of energy efficiency, and how to make sure your community, school and home are using the most energy efficient devices. One of the main forms of energy we discussed was light, and how important it is to utilize energy conserving lights. LED lightbulbs are an amazing way to conserve energy, and can save up to 40 watts per bulb compared to CFL and incandescent lightbulbs!

At the end of the presentation, all participants got to go home with an LED bulb courtesy of Powering Our World. Students were challenged to swap out an incandescent or CFL bulb for an LED bulb. Below are just a few of the students photos from later that evening changing their lights - cue saving energy time ☺

We had many students express excitement over the idea of switching their lights after learning that LED bulbs are much more energy and cost efficient than incandescent and CFL bulbs. One student went to Home Depot later that week, and bought a package of LED lights for his home.

Powering Our World was a great experience for our students, and really helped them gain additional knowledge in Climate Leadership. Instead of just sitting there listening to people speak about Climate Leadership, students were able to see hands on how electricity is generated and supplied, and how energy works in our every day lives. Even a simple task such as switching a light bulb is able to make a significant difference in energy conservation!

So, on behalf of the students in the Energy and Environmental Innovations program at the CT Centre, we would like to extend an enormous thank you to everyone involved in the Powering Our World Program! You guys are doing great work, so keep on at it!

  1. Hi Laura! We are thrilled to see your photos of the lightbulb swaps, and are excited to see your students becoming stewards of energy and the environment. Tell them to keep up the good work and to keep Green Calgary apprised of how many lightbulbs total they swapped out. Additional points in the competition can be earned by doing independent lightbulb swaps, and taking on Climate Leadership projects. If they win the competition, we will guarantee this class a spot at the Energy Revolution Fair in June and a solar panel for their classroom. We hope this keeps your students "energized" about conserving energy!
